Luke 24:13-27; 31-32… Now behold, two of them were traveling the same day to a village called Emmaus which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?” Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before GOD and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.
And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.” Then He said to them, ” O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
v31,32… Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
I begin this post on Dwelling In The Secret Place- Part II (of 2)- with one of my favorite incidents in the Holy Scriptures. After our LORD Jesus Christ suffered the agony and torment in the Garden of Gethsemane, the separation from the Father, becoming sin for us Who knew no sin, suffering the brutality of a night of torture, and the most painful six hours in human history- hanging nailed to a cross stark naked with the aggregate weight of all of mankind’s sin upon His sinless soul… our LORD’s death, burial, and resurrection signified the full redemption available to all mankind- the ultimate “Good News”… the Eternal Gospel of the Kingdom!
The Emmaus Road experience of these two disciples is a lesson in faith- and the doubt which breeds unbelief. In Jesus’ loving rebuke He said they were slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken. The Old Testament canon was sealed several hundred years before Christ’s birth (the Septuagint version- 39 books). We must be well aware of what the Holy Bible teaches from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 because it all points to our LORD Jesus Christ. His first coming was predicted with 300 prophecies all fulfilled in the historical Person known as Jesus of Nazareth (see The Messiah According to the Scriptures for irrefutable evidence). What many are not fully aware of is that there are about 1800 prophecies concerning His Second Coming which are yet -and soon- to be fulfilled! In my Last Days 4- part series the period of time in human history that we are just entering is developed comprehensively, including His Glorious Appearing.
What is clear from the Bible and the illumination of the Holy Spirit concerning Dwelling in the Secret Place- has to do with a passion, an unrelenting desire, a single-minded hunger for intimacy with GOD- ABBA Father, the LORD Jesus Christ, and the indwelling, ever expanding Holy Spirit- the Triune YHVH. This daily ‘walk’ can be moment by moment as our mind is stayed on Him. A necessary study that every Biblical Christian that desires this intimacy must accomplish over and over- is the careful reading of the Song of Solomon. An outstanding commentary that has taken me deeper and deeper into this precious treasure of truth is the commentary on Song of Songs by Watchman Nee. Please review the Table of Contents and chapter selections on Amazon via the book title link. The eight chapters of the Song of Solomon are densely packed with incredible beauty of the relationship between Christ and His Glorious Bride… who begins as the individual believer begins- mindful of self, immature, and in need of spiritual hunger. This little commentary is incredible! The author by the Holy Spirit has awakened a love and yearning in my heart for the LORD that grows stronger each day. Consider it prayerfully…
Weave these Scriptures together and ponder the implications that the LORD would reveal to your heart:
Deuteronomy 29:29… The secret things belong to the LORD our GOD, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Psalm 25:12-14… Who is the man that fears the LORD? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. He himself shall dwell in prosperity, And his descendants shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, And He will show them His covenant.
Psalm 27:4-5… One thing I have desired of the LORD, That I will seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.
Psalm 31:19… Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You In the presence of the sons of men! You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion From the strife of tongues.
I have stated earlier that each of us must have a single-minded passion for the LORD Jesus Christ. If He is both Savior and LORD of your life, then spending time with Him in prayer and in ‘practicing His presence’ (recognizing that He is with you always) will lead to an intimacy that cannot be shaken. He will reveal to us secret things- the deep things of GOD that He will impart from His Holy Word, as well as the many things that He desires to share with us concerning our personal lives, and how to successfully fulfill our individual destinies. The aspect of His Lordship that would appropriately engender in us the Holy Fear of the LORD is sadly absent in the majority of the Body of Christ, especially Christendom in the western church. Please take this seriously: the vast number of both Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures that deal with the Fear of the LORD are critical to our walking before Him in purity, being filled to overflowing with His fruit, gifts, and power to overcome in this stressful time in human history. I strongly encourage you to prayerfully study the 3- part series I posted recently- via this link: The Holy Fear of the LORD. The links to subsequent posts are at the bottom of each individual essay.
Psalm 91 (select verses)… He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My GOD, in Him I will trust”. Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your habitation, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you up in their hands. Lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.
This magnificent Psalm reveals truth beyond comprehension… truth that must be received individually. Our confidence in the LORD and His care must accept that He knows what is ultimately best and although we can experience suffering, persecution, and tribulation in this world- He guarantees our Eternity because we who know Him in reality are sealed with the Holy Spirit, forever one with Him. Because we each have a GOD- ordained destiny and purpose to fulfill, as long as we are walking it out in holiness in our daily lives- we cannot be defeated! It is likewise imperative to understand and accept that once we have completed our ‘assignment’, our crossing over into His presence may include something other than the Rapture of the church. My Last Days 4-part series describes in detail with biblical confirmation, what lies on the near horizon for the world, the Body of Christ, and the individual believer. Spiritual maturity will remind us daily that nothing we may experience is a surprise to the LORD… and that somehow:
Romans 8:28-30; 31b… And we know that all things work together for good to those who love GOD, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified… If GOD is for us, who can be against us?
It would be ludicrous to believe that we suffer illness, accidents, estrangement, or any other form of suffering because GOD wills it! NO WAY! But what is clear is that due to the fall, bad things can and do happen all too often. Somehow our right response in humility, in obedience to the revealed will of GOD, and in recognizing that our Eternity of joy will overshadow any temporal suffering that we may experience on this side. Again, Paul by the Holy Spirit is so eloquent:
Romans 8:16-19… The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of GOD, and if children, then heirs- heirs of GOD and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of GOD.
Our spiritual progress is based upon how much we desire to dwell in the presence of the LORD, how consistent we are in studying and applying faithfully the whole counsel of GOD revealed in His Holy Bible from Genesis to the Revelation, and how consistently and daily we seek His Face in sincere fervent prayer. We must spend much time listening for His voice, His direction, His expressions of love for us… for then we know Him intimately with great satisfaction and appreciation! It would be insincere to imply that I am a great success in living out the true Biblical Christian life…. no- I falter and need daily cleansing, daily submission, daily striving to act with the mind of Christ. But my peace, joy, and comfort in this life of faith is knowing wholeheartedly that GOD loves me personally. As my ABBA Father he is faithful, even when I am not. As my Savior and LORD, Jesus is forever my example to emulate, and with His ever-expanding Holy Spirit fused with my human spirit- I truly can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
In our giving, our random acts of kindness, and in our individual prayers- we must respect what our LORD Jesus Christ clearly commanded in the Scriptures:
Matthew 6:6… But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut the door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
May the Holy Spirit lead each of us into a more vibrant and passionate love relationship with our Father and the LORD Jesus Christ in these tumultuous Last Days, AMEN!
